When I was four years old my mother used to take me down to the shunting yards where a very kind crew would take me up into the cab of their tank engine to shunt trucks (Strictly against the rules and what would health and safety say today!!) I can vividly remember the heat as the firebox door was opened to put on coal and for most of the early years of my life my career ambition was to be an engine driver.
